The Theresienheim residence mainly focuses on the care of dementia patients. 80% of the residents are suffering from dementia – many of them at risk of wandering off. There is a particular safeguard in place that guarantees freedom of movement yet maximum security. Keeping in mind the question "What can we do to help our residents suffering from dementia", the home director Mr. Heinemann and his employees launched a so called "Future Workshop". The results were 3 projects having been implemented or currently in implementation. Reports from the supervisory authority on lighting conditions in Theresienheim were a trigger to take a close look at the illumination concept. The prevailing light conditions were sufficient for healthy eyes, but not for those with visual impairments due to old age or illness. Furthermore, the capacity for safety illumination was exhausted.

The comprehensive rehabilitation in Theresienheim literally brightens the lives of people suffering from dementia.

The corridors feature the VISUAL TIMING LIGHT (VTL) management system. So called light scenarios automatically create varying light intensities and colours within a 24 hour cycle. Biologically effective light helps to create a daily routine and normalise the sleep and eating patterns. Proper lighting makes the residents become more balanced and fitter, and articulation of individual patients improves.

This light concept is supported by and LED safety lighting and extra luminaires for the support areas. According to regulatory provisions, escape and emergency routes must be properly illuminated. This equally applies to safety lighting in the event of a power failure to ensure visibility for employees and residents. At night, the corridor lights will be dimmed to 10% of the daylight level (warm white). In the event of a power failure the emergency lights will turn on.

For the safety lights the VANERA Toolbox Spot (LED) was the ideal choice. By individually rotating the LED spots, the light beam can be directed to the desired position.

The AMADEA pendant luminaire supports the care personnel in their administrative work, Glare-free and flicker-free working light in combination with an even room illumination improves comfort and minimises eye fatigue. Comfortable seating areas in Theresienheim invite you to linger for a while. And the staircases reflect the residents' urge to move as well. Safety for residents and visitors alike has been improved by adhering to strict requirements on illumination. Indirect light improves the visibility of the individual stair steps. A sensor controls the light intensity depending on strong or weak natural daylight.

The recreation rooms radiate an inviting atmosphere thanks to a strong illumination intensity created by AMADEA luminaires. Low shadow formation and glare reduction create a comfortable and cosy room atmosphere. Multiple light scenarios – from candle light mood to bright illumination for handcrafting – encourage versatile use of the recreation rooms.

The VANERA Bath ceiling luminaire ensures ideal light distribution to the bathroom's floor. Low-shadow formation and strong colour reproduction properties of the light support professional nursing and health care.

In the residents' rooms the AMADEA luminaire serves multiple purposes. Main focus are sufficient brightness and a warm, glare-free illumination. A switchable reading, nursing and examination light is permanently available whenever extra illumination is needed.

The reception and administration areas are equipped with the TYCOON pendant luminaire for glare-free, flicker-free working light.
