The Rummelsberger Stift residence, honoured with an architecture award, is situated in a quiet residential area near the Starnberg lake to the south of Munich. The residential complex contains single and double bedrooms and a number of apartments for residents with special care requirements. It furthermore offers 20 places in sheltered accommodation for dementia patients. The rooms are arranged with the patients' own familiar furniture and memorabilia. The reception area, coffee lounge and the lovely park invite anyone to take a walk or have a break.

The rising average entry age into retirement and nursing homes lead to changes in the facility's requirements. The prevailing light conditions were sufficient for healthy eyes, but not for those with visual impairments due to old age or illness. Besides that, the luminaires energy consumption was to extensive. Objectives for the reconstruction (2009):

  • A modern facility that meets today's requirements for geriatric nursing

  • Enhancing the competitiveness

  • Guaranteeing the comfort of residents and care personnel

  • Sheltered living area for dementia patients

The sheltered living area has been specifically designed to support dementia patients with high risk of wandering off. There are sufficient activity options available in the corridor, common room and garden.

Light is the main clock in this residence. When no natural light source is available, this calls for solutions that keep our biological daily clock in sync. Issues such as low spatiotemporal orientation and inertia can be compensated for with high-quality illumination.

The direct/indirect light solution with high illuminance in the corridors supports the residents' safety and autonomy. The dynamic light control VISUAL TIMING LIGHT (VTL) automatically changes the luminaires' light intensity and colour. The light scenarios are repeated in a 24 hour pattern. They reflect the colour and brightness progression of natural light. In the morning the light contains a stronger blue light spectrum. It helps to naturally stimulate the residents. Until lunch-time there will be a continuous transition to brighter light with the full colour spectrum (representing natural sunlight). In the evening a warmer colour tone will be emitted. It calms the residents and improves quality of sleep.
