The Fürstlich Fürstenbergische retirement and nursing home combines the spaciousness of a palace with modern geriatric care requirements. The residence offers more than 120 nursing places including 1 short-term nursing place. Every floor has common rooms, a tea kitchen and a duty room. Spacious elevators bring the residents to the palace garden and the individual floors.

An audit on the Hüfingen residence revealed the demand for an extension of capacity. This was taken as an opportunity to further specialise on dementia nursing. In 2007 a modern new building extended the retirement home's capacity.

As a project entrant for "The smart Home" (a pilot project of the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs) it was possible to install technical equipment above standard that would further support the care personnel and improve quality of life for the residents. "Smart technology" for the dementia living group in particular was supposed to offer enhanced safety and autonomy as well as to act as a trigger for activity.

Since eyesight decreases with growing age, the light demand for sufficient eye vision is higher with elderly people. Too little light reduces social competence, eyesight and raises the risk of falling. Direct and indirect light-emitting VANERA luminaires with high illuminance have been installed in the corridors to support the natural light and secure ideal light conditions.

The corridor luminaires are equipped with biologically effective light, the so-called VISUAL TIMING LIGHT. This light can be varied in light intensity and colour. A special controller simulates natural daylight progression from sunrise to sunset. Vom Sonnenaufgang bis Sonnenuntergang sowie die Nacht. In the morning the light contains a stronger blue light spectrum. Until lunch-time there will be a continuous transition to brighter light with the full colour spectrum (representing natural sunlight). In the evening a warmer colour tone will be emitted.
